Ok so a non-drunk blog type post here so might be thin on venom and
bitter feelings this go around??
The AMEBIX gig at the troc. Was stellar. I wasn't sure what
to expect having been a huge fan of the Amebix for years and years
but never having dreamed I would ever see them play at any point.
A few random thoughts that ran through my head at the show. Was funny
going to see a band play and knowing all the words to the songs and
song titles? I can't even tell you the last time I've looked at lyrics
on a CD or LP.. Ok not totally true, I read the lyrics to some of
the Khanate stuff DEAD most notably, but otherwise I never
bother with the exercise of familiarizing myself with a bands lyrics
anymore. Hell most of the stuff I see, and listen to, anymore doesn't
even have vocals anyway. But it was pretty awesome hearing the UK
crust heads on stage doing tunes like AXEMAN, DRINK AND BE MERRY,
ICBM and others. Between song banter was pretty funny. The Baron (they
don't make names like that anymore for band dudes do they) sounded
like a pirate for some reason "arrrrghhhhh so been following
the Amebix around on tour have you, well good idea". Anyway a
super strong three piece band with orig guitarist and vocalist/ bass
player. Drummer guy was at some point in Nausea and Soulfly,
and he ran a computer that had all the synth. Tracks on it. Anyway
band was awesome; sound was great, killer simple riffs and horrible
shitty leads that were just awesome! Amazing night, most likely the
best show I'll see this year, I should just stay home for the rest
of the year and save myself the disappointment.
Maybe a week prior to that I made what is becoming a rare'ish Brooklyn
trip to see Plotkin play with a drummer. I'm failing to remember
his name but I know he played in the band ZAO. Was cool to
see James not be lazy and bring a guitar out for a dustup, and the
drummer was good. Show was at a bar type space called Monkeytown that
had a large ceiling and 40ft x 40ft square room that on each wall
had big movie screens and couches that lined all the walls. You could
sit and order dinners and stuff while the musicians played in the
middle and they played movies on the screens. Was pretty cool. Plotkin
and drummer played to some Kenneth Anger movie (I hate art movies),
Having sat through a bunch of Anger movies at NYC Film Anthology some
years ago with the Fantomas+ Zorn cronies doing live scores
I've realized I don't care for his movies one bit. AHHhhh art??? How
much art can you take anyway kids? Also ran into Hoor-paar-Kraat
music/ art guy who now lives in Brooklyn so cool to meet him after
a bunch of years. William Hooker also did a solo drum set to
some black and white silent film that was great but was wayyy long
I think something like 40mins or so? But he rules and the couch was
comfy.
Post show after drinking for like another hour or so the crowd sort
of flipped into some odd gay dance party with this 6 2" looking
chick with a black cat Mexican style wrestling mask on dancing with
this other masked guy ..hmmmmm just another night In Brooklyn I guess.
